First Time Church Visitor Guide

Visiting a church for the first time can feel intimidating. Here is everything you need to know to feel confident and comfortable.

What Should I Wear?

Most churches today are casual-friendly. Jeans and a nice top are perfectly acceptable at the majority of churches. Some more traditional congregations may lean toward business casual. When in doubt, check the church's profile on Find & Visit Church — many list their dress code under "What to Wear."

When Should I Arrive?

Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives you time to find parking, locate the entrance, and get oriented. Many churches have greeters near the door who can help you find a seat and answer questions.

What Happens During a Service?

A typical service lasts 60–90 minutes and usually includes music/worship (15–30 min), announcements, a sermon/message (20–40 min), and sometimes communion or prayer time. You are never required to participate in anything you are not comfortable with.

Will I Be Singled Out?

Some churches ask visitors to stand or raise a hand, but you are never obligated. Most modern churches are sensitive to visitor comfort and will not put you on the spot. If a church has a "Visitor Friendly" badge on Find & Visit Church, they have specifically committed to making first-timers feel welcome.

What About My Kids?

Many churches offer children's programs during the service. Kids are typically checked in before service starts with a secure name-tag system. Look for churches with a "Kids Ministry" badge on their profile for details about age groups and check-in procedures.

Do I Have to Give Money?

An offering is usually collected during the service, but as a visitor you are absolutely not expected to give. Simply let the basket or plate pass by. No one will notice or judge.
